About

By using minty leafy greens, citrusy juicy oranges, and rich chocolate walnut tones I make furniture you can taste. Pieces designed to wash over a space like freshly squeezed grapefruit. Enhancing as it elevates–fashionable furniture that ages into your story.

My name is Matthew Hayes, I build each piece by hand in my shop in Biddeford, Maine. I began working with wood scraps I brought home from the jobsite on my dining room table. It was a means to connect my trade to my artistic passion–a way to make sculpture and pass it off as furniture. Once the sawdust began to fill the wine glasses, I knew I had outgrown the dining room table. I was trained in high end contemporary furniture production by Stefan Rurak. From there, I started my shop and developed my own, ever evolving, process.

The process is artistic from beginning to end with craftsmanship and quality being the top priority. Depending on the piece, I start out with locally sourced hardwoods, found material that still has many stories left to tell, and/or high end tropical hardwoods. I design my own concrete mixtures, hardware, I do my own paintings and finishes. The rough sketch that sparks the inspiration of the piece often only distantly resembles the finished product. It's like carving away at an apple until the core is ready to be revealed.

The furniture is heirloom quality–held together with both the most advanced modern joinery techniques and styles as well as traditional joinery that has proven to last centuries. The only character left to add is that it will cultivate as it patinas in your house.
